SÖNGSKOLINN I REYKJAVIK
The Reykjavík Academy of Singing and Vocal Arts was founded in 1973 by Garðar Cortes, who ran it as a private institution for the first five years. In the autumn of 1978 teachers, students and benefactors of the academy, under Garðar’s leadership, founded the academy’s support association. The academy had its own premises at Hverfisgata 45 from 1978 amongst some additional accommodation, including the Smári concert hall at Veghúsastígur 7, purchased by the academy in the autumn of 1997. Since the autumn of 2002 the Reykjavik Academy of Singing and Vocal Arts has been located in spacious new premises and concert hall Snorrabúð, at Snorrabraut 54.
The Reykjavik Academy of Singing and Vocal Arts is subject to the provisions of the Music Schools Act, and receives grants
which meet teachers’ salaries, under a service agreement with the City of Reykjavik and other municipalities. Student fees meet other costs. The Academy employs 31 teachers, in 18 full-time-equivalent posts. Student numbers each year are 180-200. Principal and artistic director of the academy is the founder Garðar Cortes.
In the 37 years since the academy was founded, close to four thousand students have studied there, for shorter or longer
periods. The final examination from the advanced level, has been completed by 307 students, 165 students have graduated
at University level; 101 with ABRSMdip and 54 have qualified as soloists or voice teachers LRSM/Bachelor degree with honours. The academy’s Student Opera stages opera productions every year, and concerts are held regularly. The academy has collaborated since its foundation with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) in the UK. All the academy’s final examination are conducted in collaboration with the ABRSM, with Board-appointed examiners, and the students are awarded diplomas which are internationally recognised. In addition, outstanding students have the opportunity to apply for ABRSM international scholar.
