SANDBERG INSTITUUT
The Sandberg Instituut was established in 1990 by former Rietveld director Simon den Hartog, the institute was originally concerned with the organization of post-academic activities such as seminars and exhibitions. It was the first director Jos Houweling, who developed it into a fully recognized educational institute with several renowned Master programmes. Jurgen Bey, director since 2010, is making the institute even more outward-looking by starting up new programmes and strengthening the institute’s position within the international art and design practice.
As the departments are relatively small (there are 120 students in 6 programmes), the courses can be kept flexible and open for initiatives from the outside world and the students.2 The course directors are prominent artists, designers and curators with a practice in the international working field. They invite tutors, guest teachers, theorists and critics who challenge the students to reflect on their profession, work and progress.
The Sandberg Instituut believes it is increasingly important to connect education in art and design with urgent issues in society. For this reason we offer temporary study programmes with a particular research focus.
We started in 2011 with the master programme Vacant NL, which explored the potential of thousands of vacant buildings in the Netherlands. For 2013-2015 we had: School of Missing Studies, on art and learning, and Material Utopias, on the shifting boundaries between (new) materials and techniques. For 2014-2016 we plan to start with three more new programmes: Cure Master on Health(care), Designing Democracy on political spatial design and System D Academy on informal and self-organizing systems in society.
