POMERANIAN MEDICAL UNIVERSITY IN SZCZECIN
Pomeranian Medical University was founded in 1948. Viewed from its historical perspective, when compared with the multi-centennial tradition of other universities, a period of 65 years is short indeed. However, the Pomeranian Medical University due to its continuous development is well recognised both in Poland and in the world.
Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin is a public (State-owned) university with full-time, intramural system of study. The level of qualification held: master’s degree program; diploma of higher education; long cycle programme.
Poland as a member of European Union shall remain in full force and effect of the Directive 2005/36/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 7 September 2005 on the recognition of professional qualifications. Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin offers a curriculum compatible with EU directives including ECTS system.
There are four faculties at the University:
1. Faculty of Medicine
2. Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry
3. Faculty of Medicine, Biotechnology and Laboratory Medicine
4. Faculty of Health Sciences
The Pomeranian Medical University offers studies in English language as well on the Faculty of Medicine (since 1996) and on the Faculty of Dentistry (since 2006). At present, the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin has over 570 students of English Program of both faculties: medicine and dentistry.
For today there are over two hundred English Program graduates.
Our University has entered the international cooperation with foreign institutions, among them are: Ernst Moritz Arndt Universität, Greifswald, University in Rostock, Uckermark Gmbh Clinic in Schwedt; Julius Maximilian-Universität Würzburg (Germany); University in Lund and in Goeteborg (Sweden); Pennsylvania University (USA); Nantes University in France; Degli Studi di Bari University in Italy; Hedmark University College in Elverum (Norway); Trakia University in Stara Zagora (Bulgaria); Universidad De Malaga in Spain. Aims of international cooperation are scientific researches and projects; students and staff exchange; scientific conferences; common publications and periodicals.
University’s main fields of scientific achievements which were patented are the following:
- determining a predispositions to cancer (NBS1;CHEK2);
- polymorphism in the human NBS1 gene useful in diagnostics of inherited predisposition to cancer;
- pharmaceutical compositions and methods for the prevention of breast and ovarian cancer;
- method for determining reduced predisposition to cancer based on genetic profile.
Each of the University Departments have achievements to their credit. Students with special interest in a specific field of medicine have an opportunity to expand their knowledge as members of Student Scientific Groups. That makes them more familiar with methodologies of scientific research.
Examples of the outstanding work and research carried out at the University are the Departments of Genetics, Pathomorphology, and Gastroenterology.
Main Library of the University has permanent access to the Internet databases such as: MEDLINE, SCOPUS, Science Direct, Wiley InterScience, Journals@Oivid, DynaMed, ERIC, Science Direct; Cochrane Collection; ProQuest Science and Technology; ProQuest Medical Library. These factors contribute to a promising future of the University as well as of our students.
The University cooperates with many other medical schools, hospitals and clinics in Europe. Having a high grades the student can enter the ERASMUS program; PMU has signed the agreement with the Universities in Germany, France, Italy and Spain. This results in possibilities of practical training and scientific exchange for the teaching staff as well as for the students.
The students find that Szczecin is a lively city with the wide range of social, cultural and recreational facilities available in the region. By studying in Szczecin one gets the additional benefit of learning about a new culture. Naturally the studies take up much of the students’ everyday life, but Szczecin can provide a broad spectrum of activities to do in your spare time. Activities range from golf, football and sport gyms to bowling, pool and pub crawling. The city has a wide cultural life with its own philharmonic orchestra, opera, art galleries etc. The students often meet at some cozy cafes or restaurants in the afternoons. They spend weekends together taking a break from the „medical” world. In other words, most needs are met!
