The TU Dresden welcomes students and international scientists from all over the world.

The people who work and study at the TU Dresden come from 120 countries from around the world. Every year around 1,100 young people from outside of Germany choose to study at the TU Dresden. From the total of approximately 35,000 students at the TU, around 10% are international students.
The TU Dresden is the largest University in Saxony and is known as one of the oldest and most famous technical universities in all of Germany. In a nation-wide competition, known as the Initiative of Excellence, the TU Dresden proved itself to be one of the most research-oriented universities in the country. This enabled the TU Dresden to receive approval for a research cluster and a graduate school, for which they received additional grant money worth millions of Euros. The success of the TU Dresden is not least of all the result of a well-planned strategy that has always focused on research. Research at the TU Dresden is exemplified by excellence, inter-disciplinary contacts, international cooperation, and a close symbiosis between ground-breaking research and praxis-oriented research. The University also focuses on certain very carefully selected fields of  research.  The TU Dresden decided some time ago to define a so-called Research Profile Line as a key element in determining the type of research to be conducted.

The direction for innovative research is also the basis for future-oriented classroom excellence. Although the TU Dresden is known above all for its long tradition of engineering sciences, it has been expanded to become a comprehensive university with a very wide spectrum of majors, which encompasses the natural and social sciences as well as the humanities. All together, our fourteen separate departments offer about 100 different majors. Among them, more and more Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees are being offered. Students at the TU Dresden learn in state-of-the-art lecture halls and seminar rooms, are able to make use of new laboratories, and are offered a wide variety of sports activities, student clubs, and dining options. The library offers a unique study atmosphere. These are all reasons why students of the TU Dresden are, on average, far more satisfied with their academic career than students at other universities. Due to the outstanding education they receive here, graduates of the TU Dresden have the best prospects when they go onto the job market in either Germany or internationally.

The TU Dresden has contacts with numerous non-university research institutes and business partners. Students of the TU Dresden are able to take full advantage of this highly developed and active network from the very outset of their academic career. Students and junior academics take part early on in extensive research projects that the TU Dresden is involved in, in cooperation with outside partners such as the three Max Planck Institutions, the Fraunhofer Institution, Vodafone, SIEMENS and many others.

Dresden is considered to be one of the most pleasant  cities in all of Germany to live in. Museums, theatres, opera, operetta, cinema, music festivals, sports, the pub district, student clubs, bicycle and hiking paths, and much more, offer unimaginable possibilities for spending your leisure time. Along with the very high quality of living, which is not least of all due to the dazzling array of art and cultural offerings  which is furthermore significantly accentuated by the unique landscape of the Elbe river valley - Dresden is also known for its low cost-of-living . Students are able to find very reasonably priced accommodations (flat, room, dormitory) either through the University’s Studentenwerk or by themselves on the open market in the city. The costs for public transportation are covered by the student’s semester ticket.

For those who decide to attend the TU Dresden, they will receive excellent academic counseling from the very beginning. Special language courses prepare the student for studying in Dresden. In addition, each department offers tutors to help newcomers from other countries through their initial semesters. 
TU  Dresden is also considered to be an especially family-friendly university. It offers students and teachers with children all the necessities for combining academics and family under one roof.  Naturally spouses and partners should be able to find suitable employment either at the University, in the city, or somewhere locally. Employees of the TU Dresden also receive support and counseling in order to obtain the desired day-care for their children either at the University itself, in the city, or with a private firm. This service is provided by the University in close cooperation with the Studentenwerk.
